Encountre

Encountre is a free, online, massively multiplayer, turn-based, combat-oriented computer game set in a quasi-medieval fantasy world. Players create characters to explore treacherous dungeons and fight terrifying monsters, travel across the surface world to discover new lands, peoples, and creatures, and politic with both friendly and unfriendly leaders, all while gaining great wealth and fame.

Gameplay is comprised of the following:

create your own character
choose from among different races, classes, and alignments
one-on-one, or team-based combat
fight mythical monsters, legendary fighters, and powerful wizards
play against other players or against the computer
fight with weapons and armor, or use magic, or both!
defeat opponents, claim their possessions
real-time markets, where goods can be bought and sold
earn experience, advance in level and in ability
develop a reputation, either in the gladiatorial arena, or in private
have adventures, participate in quests
variety of settings, including town/city, underground caves and dungeons, wilderness, and ocean/sea
gather followers and henchmen
establish a kingdom, build a castle, and raise an army
craft magical items, research new spells
embroil yourself in the politics of the various kingdoms
champion gods to earn their favor
save/destroy the world

Encountre is built upon the d20 System, a role-playing game system published in 2000 by Wizards of the Coast originally developed for the third edition of Dungeons & Dragons.

It offers you the ability to create a character and pit him/her against other player-controlled characters or against computer generated monsters like orcs and dragons. Encounters earn your character experience, equipment, wealth, and fame. The more powerful your character becomes, the tougher the encounters will be. If your character can survive long enough, he/she may attract the attention and loyalty of other characters until, ultimately, your character may become the leader of an army of characters.

There are markets in which you can buy or sell equipment and services, and political arenas in which you can build fame.

High ranking players can build and control kingdoms and vie for the attention of deities.

Players can play against other players, or against the computer.

Encountre is free to play, though some optional elements of the game may cost some meager amount of money. For instance, if a favorite character is killed in the course of gameplay, it can be brought back to life for a dollar ($1.00 U.S.). Also, the chance to fight particular creatures may cost something.

Encountre is set in the Lost Earth Lords fantasy setting.

Encountre uses the d20 System, which is the open source version of Dungeons & Dragons, the popular pencil and paper role playing game.
